Richard Torrey is a retired entrepreneur and outdoor sports business owner best known for leading Basin Sports, Out of Bounds Snowboard Shop, and True Wheels Bike Shop in Killington, Vermont. Over the course of his career, he combined technical knowledge, business discipline, and a strong passion for skiing and mountain biking to build some of the region’s most recognized outdoor retail businesses. Before becoming a business owner, Richard Torrey also worked in computer programming and technical support, contributing to advanced system development work during the early growth of the technology industry.
Richard Torrey was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, and later moved with his family to Ludlow, Massachusetts. From an early age, he developed a strong work ethic and consistently looked for ways to earn money and support himself. During childhood and adolescence, he handled many different jobs, including mowing lawns, delivering newspapers, painting houses, babysitting, and helping with boats. These early experiences taught him responsibility, discipline, and the importance of saving money carefully.
Richard Torrey grew up understanding the challenges that came with limited financial resources. That experience influenced the way he approached work and long-term planning throughout his life. Even while balancing school and employment, he remained focused on improving his skills and creating future opportunities through education and hard work.
Richard Torrey attended Springfield Tech's computer processing school after graduating from high school. During the early 1970s, he worked full-time while taking college classes at night to further develop his technical skills. Between 1973 and 1975, he trained full-time in Experimental Engineering at Pratt & Whitney in Hartford, Connecticut, while managing an extremely demanding schedule.
Richard Torrey also volunteered to coach Little League hockey between 1973 and 1974. Despite balancing work and education, he helped guide the Ludlow hockey team to success in regional competition. Although professional responsibilities later prevented him from continuing as a coach, the experience demonstrated his leadership abilities and commitment to teamwork.
Richard Torrey purchased his first family home in Windsor, Connecticut, in 1975 after years of disciplined saving. That same year, he left Pratt and Whitney to begin working as a programmer at Travelers Insurance. His technical skills and strong understanding of computer systems allowed him to move quickly into technical support roles within the company.
Richard Torrey became involved in designing more efficient methods for accessing and developing computer systems. His contributions helped improve system development processes during a period when many large technology companies were still struggling with similar challenges. Although he performed well in the corporate technology environment, he eventually became interested in building something independently through entrepreneurship.
Richard Torrey entered the retail industry in 1991 after a friend’s ski shop business failed. Initially, he had only provided financial support to help the business get started in 1987. When the store later closed, he decided to purchase it directly from the bank. At the time, he had very little experience in retail management, but he committed himself to learning every aspect of the business.
Richard Torrey studied the ski retail market carefully and focused on improving customer service, operations, and product selection. His determination gradually transformed the struggling store into a successful and respected business within the regional outdoor sports industry. Over the next thirty-two years, the ski shop consistently earned awards and recognition for its service and industry contributions.
Richard Torrey continued growing his business operations by opening Out Of Bounds Snowboard Shop in 1996 and later launching True Wheels Bike Shop. These businesses expanded his involvement in outdoor recreation retail and helped strengthen his reputation within the skiing, snowboarding, and mountain biking communities.
Richard Torrey’s daughter joined the business in 1996 and contributed to the company’s continued growth. His wife later joined the organization full-time in 2010 as chief financial officer after previously assisting part-time. Through multiple expansion projects completed over many years, the retail space eventually grew from approximately 1,000 square feet to more than 24,500 square feet.
Richard Torrey remained committed to improving the business even after achieving great success. He consistently introduced new ideas and operational improvements, often staying ahead of competitors within the regional outdoor retail market. Other businesses frequently adopted strategies and ideas first introduced through his stores.
Richard Torrey sold the business in August 2022 after decades of leadership within the outdoor sports industry. He credits much of the company’s success to the employees who stayed loyal over the years and supported the business during periods of growth and change. At the same time, his planning, persistence, and adaptability played a major role in the company’s long-term success.
Richard Torrey now spends his retirement skiing in winter and mountain biking in the warmer months. He also enjoys traveling and spending time outdoors after many years devoted to building and expanding his businesses. Through careers in both technology and entrepreneurship, Richard Torrey built a life defined by discipline, resilience, and a lasting passion for outdoor recreation.
